The Recent Past

I have added the following reviews to the Yesteryear section:

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

X Men Origins

Grade: F+

X-Men: First Class (2011)

X Men First Class

Grade: B-

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Grade: B+

After seeing the last, I have to wonder: how is George Clooney not one of Wes Anderson’s go-to-actors? They seem a perfect fit.

    • He voices the Fox here, and his delivery is tailor made for an Anderson movie. I have to think he’d be just as good, if not better, in a live action role.

    • I think First Class is good, but I also think there enough flaws that it isn’t great.

I guess you might be right; you might just be more generous than me.

  1. Meant to add this comment on the review itself, but i’ll just put it here: I think Clooney fits this particular movie just fine but I don’t know if he would be great in live-action films. He has *too much* star power. I can’t explain why Bill Murray works, because he’s a big name too. Just not George Clooney big. Clooney often plays it too straight as an on-screen actor, I don’t think he would have the chops to pull off Anderson’s quirk, particularly with his facial mannerisms. He just doesn’t have that kind of appeal, not to me anyway. But for the animated one he’s in, nobody could have done it better than him either.

    • Agreed that no one could have done Fox better.

And that’s an interesting point. I was thinking of his O’Brother performance when I asked the question. But he hasn’t really played that sort quirky character ever since. Maybe you’re right.
